Keely Hodgkinson won 800m gold at the World Indoor Championships on Sunday, finishing in a championship-record 1min 55.30sec. This victory marked her first world title.

What happened?

Hodgkinson's win was part of a golden half-hour for British athletics, with Molly Caudery and Georgia Hunter Bell also winning gold medals.

The three women hugged each other and posed for a celebratory photograph draped in Union Flags after their victories.

Why it matters for Keely Hodgkinson

Hodgkinson's victory is a significant milestone in her career, coming after a series of hamstring injuries in 2025. She had described that year as a "s---show" but has since trained hard and emerged stronger and faster than ever.

Hodgkinson spent the past five months training alongside Hunter Bell in South Africa, the Pyrenees, and Manchester.

What comes next?

The prospect of breaking the longest standing outdoor world record in athletics this summer now beckons for Hodgkinson. She will aim to beat Jarmila Kratochvilova's time of 1min 53.28sec.

Hodgkinson's margin of victory felt more like something you would see in a school sports day than a global championship. She said, "I just let loose; I'm in the shape of my life – why leave it to chance?"

The gold-rush had begun over 1500m with Hunter Bell, who returned to athletics after running Parkruns only three years ago.

Hodgkinson then took an hour's break and anchored a women's 4x400m relay team in a 50.1sec personal best split, which was also the fastest of the championship.

Hodgkinson received the gold medal belonging to men's 800m winner Cooper Lutkenhaus in error before later doing an exchange with the American.

Britain had only ever previously won three gold medals at a single championship once, in 1999, and this achievement adds up to a best-ever team haul behind only the USA on the final medal table.
